Jen grew up in York, PA (home of the York Peppermint Patty) and attended Bryn Mawr College, where she performed research in Susan White’s lab using chemical reagents to study RNA structure. As a graduate student in the chemistry department at Yale University, she worked in Alanna Schepartz’s lab, studying the kinetics and mechanism of protein•DNA interactions. After obtaining her Ph.D., she set off for Carolyn Bertozzi’s lab at UC Berkeley and the adventure of yet another biopolymer, carbohydrates. Seduced by both California and glycobiology, she decided to stay in the Bay Area and to continue studying the enzymes responsible for carbohydrate assembly. Her research group at Stanford was formed in 2005. The group had two over-riding goals: (1) to obtain a more molecular understanding of the machinery of eukaryotic glycosylation, (2) to exploit that understanding to develop biochemical tools. She has now joined the DTR at UT Southwestern. |
